In keeping with the holiday season, the Sarasota Military Academycadets and other local volunteers gathered to honor veterans for their service at the Sarasota National Cemetery. For the first time, a wreath was placed at each grave (all 5,170 of them) by veterans, families, friends, and young people to give a national tradition some local meaning. A group of local volunteers gathered to raise enough money so that each person resting there would have their own wreath. The laying of Christmas wreaths on graves started in 1992 at Arlington National Cemetery inVirginia and has now spread around the country. This is a remarkable way to honor those that have passed on and remember the sacrifice that they gave for us and our country.
